New research indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
