Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
