Colombian President Says 'I Will Return to Arms Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, heightening tensions in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs drug factories and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Talking to reporters over the weekend, the American leader suggested similar use of force against Colombia, stating the country is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure involved in producing narcotics and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the leading source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the fight against narcotics trade and received cross-party backing in Washington, yet ties have worsened significantly following Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised following a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Response

When asked if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me personally."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote online.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain the president, which many of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures and Widespread Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that the president’s security detail had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the political spectrum have rejected the notion of a US attack against their nation.

Political and Economic Sanctions

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization after he called on US troops to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, it placed financial sanctions against the president, the first lady and a number of close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
