The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
